Truly bespoke

Whew! I’ll tell ya: A conference like SXSW can really do a girl in. I am looking forward to the forthcoming weekend and many many plans of doing little to nothing!

Well, not entirely nothing. A week from Friday I’ll be on my way to London and Paris! BC can attest to the fact that I’ve been planning this trip for months… and that I’ve actually created a numbered packing list (too much?), but there’s much to take care of on the home front before being away for ten days.

But that’s beside the point, right? The point is… I’m going to be writing about a bunch of English designers until next Friday.

Resilica is a truly bespoke worktop and surface material which is hand made in the UK from 100% recycled glass waste.” I don’t have a house, so I don’t spend a lot of time thinking about kitchen and bath surfaces, but I totally love the look of this Resilica. Especially  in some of the designs where they’ve married older, vintage looking products and the more modern surface, like in the picture above.

Those Brits… they are smart ones.

One of the coolest things about SXSW is that in every workshop/panel they create Twitter hashtags (i.e. #momsxsw) which are basically a running diary of notes taken by the workshop participants. It’s a really great way to get the highlights of a workshop without attending. And you get the POV of many different people, which make the notes more comprehensive.

If you look at my Twitter feed, you’ll see tweets with the # for various workshops I’ve attended. Click on the hashtag and you’ll access a wealth of information.

Just thought ya’ll might find it helpful or interesting!

Drumroll, please

As mentioned yesterday, I’m here at SXSW Interactive conference totally connected, yet in another world.

The music portion of SXSW begins tomorrow and musicians, with their instruments and scruffy beards are all beginning to populate the streets of Austin. So, I thought it appropriate to show a collection of ways in which drum sets can be integrated into home design.

So I work in advance on this blog and schedule posts when they’re ready and… I totally forgot to finish all my entries this week while I’m at SXSW. Oops.

I’m in sessions all day so I’ll work on it later. Check out some of the archives in the meantime! Hope your week is getting off to a great start!

The Live Music Capital of the World

Woo-hoo! Guess where I’m headed today? To Austin, Texas for the SXSW Interactive conference. I am BEYOND excited.

My agency graciously sponsored my trip so that I might become further educated in all matters of digital marketing and deserving of my self-given job title of “Social Media Maven.”

So. In honor of the great live music capital, here’s a roundup of repurposed vinyl:

Stuart Haygarth

I can’t remember how I first came across Stuart Haygarth, the Berlin based artist whose “work is about giving banal and overlooked objects a new significance.” He sure has a way of making the insignificant pretty darn good looking, doesn’t he? I would kill for the prescription glasses chandelier, and not just because I desperately need a new pair of glasses.

Get Back Inc.

As I get older, I’m finding that my personal design preferences lean closer to industrial and mid-century design, and farther away from this traditional/ country/glamour/eccentric mesh I’ve been developing over the years.

So when I found this company, Get Back Inc. I went bonkers for the AMAZING industrial pieces they have in stock.

A very efficient workspace.

What would make for a lovely kitchen island, I love the milky white top surface!

An old school lunchtable – super cute! Wonder if adults could fit at the table? Would be neat in a garden.

Oh, how I’d love to fill this with crisp, fresh linens!

This reminds me of the awesome bed/palette in Baby Sister’s Nursery (which I’m just crazy about!)

These would look fabulous against a wall painted a deep purple or moss green.

Another cool kitchen island option.

The most succinct craft cabinet one could ever own. I love this color!

This would be great in a kid’s playroom (obviously) but it would also be a neat space divider. And, if it were in a living room, it would be very handy on game night.

These are interesting, I’m not sure what could be done with them. My first thought was to make them into lamps. Can you think any other ways to repurpose these beauties?

And finally, whilst helping my good friend Swirby clean out her NY storage unit* this weekend, she came across the fabric panels that had once served as her closet in the NY apartment we lived in back in the early 2000′s**. This would have been an infinitely cooler closet solution.

* I’d like to take this opportunity to note that Swirbs moved from NY in 2007. A good portion of  her belongings have been renting a nice (but rather dark) studio space on 11th Ave and W. 29th St. Actually, many of the remnants of Swirby’s time in NY ended up in my apartment for some repurposing and refinishing. More about THAT in the coming months. Also…

** Do people really say early 2000′s? Weird.

Milk, It Does A Home Good

Who designed the first milk bottle? I’ll bet he or she has no idea they’d create such an iconic design. Brooklyn artist, Alyssa Ettinger does beautiful ceramic recreations of old school milk bottles. But I love these lighting fixtures made from repurposed bottles. There’s just something fresh about them, isn’t there?

“If you don’t care for tea, you could at least make polite conversation!”

The new Alice in Wonderland is coming out this weekend. It looks to be a feast for the eyes. I’ve always loved the version with Carol Channing. “Jam tomorrow, jam yesterday, but never ever jam today!

Regardless, the Mad Hatter would approve of any of these items made from tea cups.
