Field Trip: Greenpoint Antiquing

Since I totally failed on my Friday post this week (oops!) thought I’d make up for it with an extra fun field trip recap for your weekend reading enjoyment.

A few weeks back, I recruited some friends to accompany to a little enclave in our fair Brooklyn called Greenpoint. Everyone raves about the neighborhood and I’d been keeping a list of stores in the area I wanted to shop. So off I went on the G train for a day of antiquing (and consuming and imbibing) in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

First stop, Brunch at Five Leaves. We talked the royal wedding and shared tales of who we’d consider to be “story guys” (thank you Darcy for that term). This bathroom door with a vintage porthole mirror caught my eye.

Brunch was incredible as expected (I highly recommend the truffle fries) and off we went to our first stop: Vintage Modern. Caroline and Jordan led the way in to this adorable tiny shop of midcentury finds.

Detail of the lamp I wish I had a place for.

And a spunky bird I found especially charming. The shop owner was super sweet and this is where I bought the green tool chest that now graces BC’s dresser. Again, it’s a small shop, but definitely high quality, great pieces.

On our walk to the next antique store, Darcy and I got derailed by a the clothing shop: In God We Trust. The decor was perfectly vintage styled: I spy a stack of suitcases in the back of the store.

I wanted to run away with this mirror. Though the home pieces in the store are sometimes for sale (according to the saleslady), this particular piece was not. However, I did learn that there is a Home store for the brand located in Williamsburg. Added that one to the day’s list.

On an unexpected block near the water, we found a truly special shop, Le Grenier. They had taxidermy birds fitting for the times.

I would like this for my kitchen table, I’d have a lot of fun loading it up with small treasures as a centerpiece until it was needed for dinner party apps or desserts.

I thought these salvaged pieces would make excellent bookends. What else you could do with them?

Look in the sky, it’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s… Birdcages, my favorite!

Now, let me tell you; I am supremely smitten with this dish set. It was $175 but the whole set was probably 5-8 sets with cups, small/large plates and bowls. I really really love it. This pattern would make me smile year round. Wonder if it’s still there…

As you can see, Le Grenier was absolutely lovely. They also do rentals, which is totally awesome.

On to Kill Devil Hill on Franklin Street.

Clipboards as Frames: Good idea. This store was more of a general store so I didn’t find a ton of home goods, but still it’s a neat little place.

Ahem, we hit another clothing store: Dalaga, and I noticed the dressing room dividers were actually salvaged doors! I found a super cute shirt at this store and got a great deal. Highly recommended! The owner and staff were super nice as well.

We had a pleasant walk (it was a beautiful day) to In God We Trust Home over on Wyeth. I bought my newest “love lock” there (which I’ll photograph and put up later, it has yet to find permanent placement)

Darcy and I ended our trek with a drink at Hotel Demano. I’m obsessed with the decor at this place, especially the calming sea photo by the door.

The verdict: Greenpoint is fantastic. You have to know where you’re going and the shops are few and far between, but it makes for a pleasant couple of hours – shopping around and enjoying the walk. Especially if the day begins and ends with a cocktail!

Hope your weekend is off to a fabulous start!

  1. Erin-I think not only could you use those brackets as bookends but what about wine bottle holders? I bet you could rest a bottle of wine in that curved part. You could attach them stacked onto the wall with the wine bottles floating in the center.
I am tucking this article away for the dressing room idea. I had a friend just drop off a bunch of different doors at my house that he was going to throw away! I have a pair of glass french ones, a solid walnut one and a few more miscellaneous ones. If I don’t sell them any time soon then I will save them for my future shop! xo

    • Oooh, good idea on the brackets!

I’m planning a new door project as well. i’m going to take an elaborate door and mount a mirror on it to create a cool full length mirror for our bedroom.

Lucky you to have what sounds like awesome doors just dropped off!

  2. PS-I love that china pattern. It makes me think of you and your love for Peacocks! You should totally buy it! And then maybe you can find the rest of the set at Replacements.com located in Greensboro, NC.

    • That’s exactly what I think of too! The shop owner did say that she’d had a hard time tracking down additional pieces.

  3. E — you HAVE to have that dish set. It was so SO cute, and you are absolutely right that it would make you smile all year round. And as a bonus, it’s totally not too girly, so it would work for BC, too. In the words of Michael Scott, it’s a “win win WIN!!!” I hope they’re still there, too. :) Thanks for the super-fun day!!
